Grief changes you. It shows up unexpectedly and turns your world upside down. Everything can feel overwhelming, like you’re underwater while life goes on above you.
If you’re going through this, remember: you’re not alone. It’s okay to feel broken, but you’re not.
When it comes to yoga during tough times, it’s not about how flexible or strong you are. It’s about being present—being with yourself, the hurt, and your breath, even if that’s all you have in the moment.
Why Yoga Can Help When You’re Grieving
Grief affects our bodies. It can show up as a tight chest, a restless mind, or a lack of appetite. Some days, you might feel empty, while other days feel heavy. Nothing seems to fit.
Yoga offers a safe space when you’re lost. It doesn’t require anything from you except to be there—however that looks for you. You can cry, rest, or simply be still. That’s what it’s all about.
There’s no “right” way to deal with loss. Yoga won’t solve everything, but it can support you while you carry what you’re feeling.
A Simple Practice for Hard Days
You don’t have to push yourself at all. This is an easy, gentle invitation to just exist—however that looks today.
- Child’s Pose (Balasana)
Kneel down, lean forward, and rest your forehead on the ground. Let the earth carry you and support the weight of your pain.
- Seated Forward Fold (Paschimottanasana)
Sit and lean forward over your legs. No forcing it. Just a calm moment to look inward. If you feel tears, let them flow. That’s healing too.
- Supported Savasana
Lie down. Grab some pillows or blankets to feel cozy. Put a hand on your heart or belly. Just be still and breathe. Or just let your breath be natural.
If all you do is lay there with your eyes closed, that’s perfectly fine. That’s enough.
You’re Not Doing It Wrong
Grief isn’t a straight path. It’s messy and tiring. Some days you’ll feel like yourself; other days, you won’t even recognize who you are.
Remember, there’s no set timeline, and there’s no “right” way to handle it. You don’t have to feel okay. You’re not required to be strong or rush through your healing.
Yoga doesn’t seek your perfection. It simply offers space for where you are right now.
